Q What is NYARA?
A: New York Adventure Racing Association (aka “NYARA") is a not-for-profit association made up of athletes from all types of outdoor related activities. Our mission is to join individuals with similar skills into teams, and offer technical assistance to one another. We promote and direct our own trail running, paddling, biking and orienteering events. We also make donations to select local charity or environmental groups in the region where each event is held.
Q What is Adventure Racing?
A: Adventure racing is one of the few sports where just completing a race is considered a victory. It allows runners, hikers, climbers, bikers, and paddlers to participate and compete in new and challenging events. Large expedition competition races are over 300 miles and can take up to 10 days to complete, while sprint races can take only an hour or two. Adventure racing not only challenges the body but the mind as well. Competitors must always travel together as a team, putting an emphasis on teamwork rather than individual achievement.
Q Who runs the show at NYARA?
A: There are quite a few people behind the scenes at NYARA – namely racers and people who just can’t get enough adventure packed into their lives. They’re all volunteers so all of their time and effort goes back into NYARA. To find out who they are, go to the NYARA Think Tank.
