Adventure Racing Turns 100 in NYC

Well, one hundred members strong, anyway. Adventure racing in New York City is alive and kicking - membership in the New York Adventure Racing Association hits 100 this month.

NYARA is New York City's only network for adventure racers living in the metropolitan area. At less than a year old, it's already making news with its training clinics and races, and now, at 100, it's better than ever, and poised to take the AR world by storm.

Chris Ballou, co-founder of NYARA with J.J. Lovett, noted that the explosive growth was unlike anything he'd initially predicted.

Adventure racing's popularity has grown exponentially as people discover a desire to get outdoors. New York City may be known for its high-rises, but beneath the concrete surfaces lurk innumerable opportunities to get dirty and muddy and have fun while you're doing it.

With its many parks and greenways, a fat lot of which aren't visible to the untrained eye, New York is a great place to adventure. NYARA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to spreading news about adventure racing and maintaining a network among New Yorkers with a nasty itch for the outdoors to scratch.
