Montebello, NY -

Well, okay. They're not usually nocturnal. And you probably wouldn't call it a new species. What it was, really, was a bunch of adventure racers mucking about in the dark, a tangle of headlamps, flashlights, and one chance encounter with a big black bear.

At the New York Adventure Racing Association's most recent training clinic, Full Moon Land Navigation, twenty adventure racers with a hankering to hack through bushes and slog through swamps in the dark showed up to see who'd be crowned Queen and King of the Dark. NYARA co-founder Chris Ballou set the course during the day and sat in his large heated truck waiting until 2AM, when the last team stumbled their way into across the finish line.

All told, only four racers finished the roughly five-mile course, with the winners crossing the line at just about midnight, having survived a black bear. One unfortunate team overshot the turnoff for checkpoint two and never made it past that.

You, too, can navigate (or not) at night. Check NYARA's web site regularly for other great training clinics.

NYARA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to spreading news about adventure racing and maintaining a network among New Yorkers with a nasty jones for the outdoors. NYARA members have access to training clinics and association-sponsored races that teach skills necessary in adventure racing.
