Saddles and Paddles
Blue Marsh Lake, PA - It's nothing naughty, we promise. But it is scintillating and exciting: On April 27, 2002, the beautiful countryside of Berks County, PA will be overrun by athletic people in canoes and on bikes. In the New York Adventure Racing Association's first race of the season and the Northeast's season opener, Blue Marsh Lake will take part in the newest and most exciting sport to sweep the face of athleticism to date, adventure racing. Racers will take their mountain bikes over some of the most technical terrain in the Northeast and paddle through some of the most pristine waters around, all for the sake of bagging a few orienteering points. Over twelve hours, racers will test their endurance, patience, and smarts. Teams of two and three, and even the intrepid soloist, will brave the trails and waters here just for the chance to win the first race of the season. Aren't you curious to see what's going on in the Reading Eagle and Times' own backyard? Chris Ballou, course designer for the Saddle and Paddle and president and founder of NYARA, is available for interviews: Come find out why he and Matt LeBow, designer of the mountain bike leg, chose Blue Marsh Lake for what's rumored to be the toughest bike segment in all of Northeast adventure racing. Or, come on out and get a taste of adventure racing. NYARA is the only not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to spreading news about adventure racing and maintaining a network among Northeasterners with a nasty jones for the outdoors. NYARA members have access to training clinics and association-sponsored races that teach skills necessary in adventure racing. Recently, NYARA teamed up with Health and Fitness Promotions, organizers of the Ohio Expedition Race, to offer one lucky NYARA team a slot in the race as the grand prize of NYARA's Longest Day and Saddle and Paddle Races. Keep your eyes open for more news about adventure racing in the world's greatest city, from the only organization with the resources and know-how to bring it on. # # # |
