Adventure Racers Wimp Out

Staten Island, NY -

After all, what's a piddling 10K? At best, it's a middling distance. Well, throw in hundreds of feet of elevation gain, five great mystery events, and the fact that you'll have to cart another human being around for the entire race, and you've got a whole different animal.

Yep, that's right, April 27, 2002 will mark the second annual running of the New York Adventure Racing Association's High Rock Challenge. This year, Staten Island's own Black Dog Grill joins us in sponsoring this very special event, to be held at the Henry Kauffman campground, part of New York City's Greenbelt.

300 teams of two will navigate some of New York City's toughest terrain (after all, we are talking about the borough that houses Fresh Kills landfill…) while keeping an eye on their respective teammates. They'll face mystery events that they never thought they'd encounter in real life. (Last year, carried around a stick of uncooked pasta for a half-mile before passing it on to a race official.) There will be mud. Racers will get wet. And yes, it will be loads of fun to watch.

The High Rock Challenge is held in memory of NYPD Officer John Kelly, who died in the line of duty. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Widows and Children's Fund of the NYPD.

NYARA is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to spreading news about adventure racing and maintaining a network among Northeasterners with a nasty jones for the outdoors. NYARA members have access to training clinics and association-sponsored races that teach skills necessary in adventure racing. Recently, NYARA teamed up with Health and Fitness Promotions, organizers of the Ohio Expedition Race, to offer one lucky NYARA team a slot in the race as the grand prize of NYARA's Longest Day and Saddle and Paddle Races.
