The following modifications have been made to the Hike-a-thon rules:
- Each individual must carry 10% of his or her body weight (this has been changed from 20%)
- This DOES NOT include food or water (your pack must be 10% and then you add the chosen amount of food and water)
- You can use a bag of cat litter or dog food to get the exact weight
- You can use trekking poles and towing systems
- Once your team passes through the weight station you can redistribute the weight among the team as you see fit
- Your pack will be weighed at the start and finish
- You must carry 100 Fl oz of water or have a container and means of purification (ex. pills or filters, this will also be checked)
- You must also carry the mandatory gear (this is part of the 10%)
- Teams will be allowed to change distances during the competition as long as it is at a safety check station
- These changes void any other previous rules for the Hike-A-Thon in which a conflict can arise
