NYARA Races and Clinics

Land Navigation Exercise Level I

This training clinic provides the opportunity for novice adventure racers to be guided through techniques of adventure racing navigation in a real environment, or for more experienced navigators to practice their skills in race-simulated conditions.

Directions

Follow Palisades Interstate Parkway northbound to exit 17 Anthony Wayne Recreation Area.

Meeting Point

North tip of parking lot.

5-7 miles

(A shortened course will be available for novices)

Format

Choose either format:
1-Race format - for people not requiring instruction, but who wish to test their skills under race conditions.
2-Clinic format - learn the basics from an experienced navigator then run the course with him.

Gear List

NYARA will provide maps for this clinic; upon completion you can keep the map. The map we will be using will be 1:48,000 "Topo" computer generated map with limited trails and limited roads. Navigation will require dead reckoning with terrain association.

Mandatory

  • Compass
  • Whistle (around neck)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Food and water for 8 hrs of activity
  • Military protractor and pen
    (if you need a military protractor they will be sold onsite for $4)

Recommended

  • Gaiters
  • Map pens or highlighters
  • Ruler
  • Light hiker/AR shoes
  • Waterproof map case
  • Blister kit
  • An electronic map measurer such as the Map Master, which is available from www.outnback.com. They cost about $20 and are very helpful.
