The Ladder 5 Cross Country Challenge

Staten Island, NY
19 July 2003

Were you a participant in The Ladder 5 Cross Country Challenge? Let us know what you thought.

I did the 5k race with my sister. It was her first race and she was very nervous, but after finishing she immediately said she was ready to sign up for another.

I think the after party was the best I have ever attended. (And I have been to quite a few.) There was so much for kids and families to do. My nephews who ALWAYS seem to be bored, were totally happy and occupied. Making it fun for the kids was critical to making it fun for all of us.

The food and the prizes for the kids race were incredible too.

All in all, it was totally worth the wait at the start, and a REALLY fun event.

Did you think the level of organization was adequate?
No

If no, why not?
Not this years Ladder 5....I understand why the race was delayed, but the post race events seemed delayed, and most disappointing of all was my time not recorded. It's frustrating when I drove an hour to the race, and I wasn't even listed. I understand these things do happen, but it can discourage people (not me) to register in the future for this race, and that would be a shame.

General feedback:
I really enjoyed this years course more than last year...good climbs. In addition, this event makes for a nice family outing.

One suggestion, directions to the park.

Christine Farly

Overall it was great. I had fun and I look forward to many more. One aspect of the race that may be considered for the next run, is to hold a race where the running lane isn't so narrow. It was easy to get caught in a log jam througout the duration of the park. Nothing we can do about that at Wolfe's Pond, but let's organize an additional 5/10K in a park where the running area isn't so narrow. Once again, good organization...had a great time.

No

If no, why not?
Could have used more help in the woods some runners went off course 5k in particular.

General feedback:
Any time firefighters get together its a great time. Ran in the 10K the course seemed rather short. How was it measured any feed back on this.

Did you enjoy the event?
Mostly

If no, why not?
Well, they needed to have more people on the course giving directions at every turn and better organization. No one knew where to go with the arrows all over the place. I have done Benefit events with the guys from Ladder 5 and Engine 24 and they're great guys. I am willing to help map it out and get more people to volunteeer to be on the course next year. The paths were also still a little rocky and narrow but I understand the rain the night before made it much more difficult.

Also the Parks Department, AS USUAL brought their stage down over and hour late.

Did you think the level of organization was adequate?
No

If no, why not?
Because the race was supposed to start at 9 AM and it went off at 9:45 or 10. I have done events like this, with bands and the stage but no race and I understand how hard they are but the race needs to go off within 15 minutes of its listed start time and if some runner's are late, they lose out. I was there on time. I am willing to help any way I can to make this event better next year.

It is also too hard to run through a course with tons of arrows pointing in 2 different directions at the same time. More people need to be on the course telling the runners which way to go.

General Feedback
I enjoyed the event very much. It was a great day outside at the park/beach but it was hard to get an accurate feel of the course as I got lost with not enough people out there to tell me which way to go.

So, it was a lot fo fun but it definitely still needs some work. maybe just ONE race of 5K is needed for the day also. Two races at once with people all over the woods made it almost impossible to figure out where I was and where I had to go.

Like I said, I am willing to help out to make it an even better event next year.

I thought it was a very challenging course and I enjoyed very much.
