Missed the first navigation clinic? Didn’t get enough the first time you attended? No worries! NYARA has another scheduled so you can hone those map skills, dazzle us with your UTM plotting prowess and captivate us with your compass knowledge.

Format: Cover topographical map basics (symbols, legends, contour lines, scales), compass basics and go over what UTMs are and how to plot them. You will then have a chance to cover pre-race “process” planning using an actual race map and passport as a teaching tool.

Clinic Goal: To cover navigation basics and to enable racers who are doing their first 1+ day race to have a clue as to what to do when they finish their gear check-in and are now given their maps and passport. We will be using the actual map and Passport to the Odyssey E-Fix.

Notebook Pens Highlighters Compass (with built in declination adjustment) NYARA will provide you with a UTM grid tool to use which you can purchase if you'd like. You may also want to consider buying an electronic map measurer such as the one our fabulous partners at ARequip.com have at this link. Trails Illustrated map number 242 New River Gorge National River. You must have this map or the class will basically be worthless. Call outdoor stores like Campmor, EMS, Ramsey Outdoor, etc. to see if they have that map in stock. You can also order the map online at www.trailsillustrated.com Military protractor with grid scale reader with reader templates with 1000 meter squares in the USGS standard scales of 1:25,000 and 1:50,500, available from www.mapnotes.com. NYARA will provide you with a UTM grid tool for this clinic which you can optionally purchase. Recommended: An electronic map measurer such as the Map Master, which is available from www.arequip.com. They cost about $20 and are very helpful. NB: NYARA members get a 10% discount at AREquip so be sure to use you benefit code.
