Land Navigation Clinic Level II - Race Format

Time to get off the couch and go frolic in the woods! NYARA’s Land Navigation II clinic is set for March 20 and will be held in a race format. That’s right-come out and test your navigation skills against the mighty, mighty Harriman State Park and size yourself up against the competition. This is a perfect opportunity to test your fitness level and to find out if all that hard winter training has paid off. You can enter solo or as a team of 2-3 people.

Kanawauke Circle Parking Lot in Harriman State Park

From South: I-87 Exit 15A to Rt 17 North. Go about 2.5 mi into Sloatsburg. Turn Right (at light) onto Seven Lakes Drive. Go about 7 mi to Kanawaukee Circle. Go around to 3rd Exit and turn onto Rt 106 West. Go 0.3 mi to the Kanawaukee Circle parking lot.

From North: Bear Mountain Bridge to Rt 6 West to the Long Mountain (Queensboro) Circle to Seven Lakes Drive South. Stay on Seven Lakes Drive about 7 mi (through Tiorati circle) to the Kanawaukee Circle. Take 1st Exit to Rt 106 West and go 0.3 mi to the Kanawaukee Circle parking lot.

Gear List

    NYARA will provide maps for this clinic; upon completion you can keep the map. The map we will be using will be 1:48,000 "Topo" computer generated map with limited trails and limited roads. Navigation will require dead reckoning with terrain association.

Mandatory

  • Compass
  • Whistle (around neck)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Food and water for 8 hrs of activity
  • Military protractor and pen
    If you need a military protractor they will be sold onsite for $5)

Recommended

  • Gaiters
  • Map pens or highlighters
  • Ruler
  • Light hiker/AR shoes
  • Waterproof map case
  • Blister kit
  • An electronic map measurer such as the Map Master, which is available from www.outnback.com. They cost about $20 and are very helpful.
