Land Navigation Clinic - Race Format

Time to get off the couch and go frolic in the woods! NYARA’s Land Navigation Clinic is set for April 16 and will be held in a race format. That’s right-come out and test your navigation skills against the mighty, Allamuchy State Park and size yourself up against the competition. This is a perfect opportunity to test your fitness level and to find out if all that hard winter training has paid off.

NOTE PARKING LOT CHANGE! We are now parking at the Scenic Overlook instead of inside Allamuchy State Park. Directions to the scenic overlook: I-80 East Scenic Lookout immediately after Exit 19. If on I-80 West, then Exit 19 and use Rt 517 to U-turn onto I-80 East (go Left at end of ramp, over bridge, and turn Left back onto I-80). Look for Scenic Overlook immediately on Right.

Gear List

NYARA will provide maps for this clinic; upon completion you can keep the map. The map we will be using will be 1:48,000 "Topo" computer generated map with limited trails and limited roads. Navigation will require dead reckoning with terrain association.

Mandatory

  • Compass
  • Whistle (around neck)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Food and water for 8 hrs of activity
  • Military protractor and pen
    If you need a military protractor they will be sold onsite for $5)

Recommended

  • Eye protection (sunglasses, glasses, safety glass to keep from getting a good stick in the eye while bushwhacking)
  • Gaiters
  • Map pens or highlighters
  • Ruler
  • Light hiker/AR shoes
  • Waterproof map case
  • Blister kit
  • An electronic map measurer such as the Map Master, which is available from www.outnback.com. They cost about $20 and are very helpful.
