The High Rock Challenge

Staten Island, NY
28 April 2007

High Rock Challenge

Were you a participant in the 2007 High Rock Challenge? Let us know what you thought.

It was great fun! The cargo net and sandbag challenges were terrific. It was like a "Survivor" challenge with a whole lot of running added in. Count me in for next year! (I wish there were more of these events in the Staten Island area)

I felt like I was on "the edge of my seat" during this entire race! It was like "The amazing race". I'm used to running trails and all, but nothing like this.....I can't wait to do it again.....in the meantime, I'm looking for more races like this!

Scotty

I tried to take a cup of water (while I was waiting for my start in the race) on the water table where the sand bags were in the beginning of the race. I was told (by the young man) that I could not have any because the runners would be coming by and they might run out. I paid $35 for this race ($70 per team) and I could not have a cup of water??? That is not acceptable. There should have been an abundance of hydration before after, and most importantly during the race. There was not enough water along the course either.

You've outdone yourselves. I was so disappointed when this race went away, but now its back and better than ever! What a course. You are real sadists. The challenges were fun and wicked. The water torture? You are out of your minds. My teammate and I had a great time. I just wish you'd run more races like this and I was shocked that there weren't more teams. Team O'F.I.R.E will be back next year and we're not settling for 4th again!!! Thanks NYARA for a great race.

I couldn't think of a way to have more fun than to spend a beautiful spring morning running through the woods while everything is starting to bloom and facing the challenges of the High Rock Challenge. The mystery challenges were a lot of fun as were the other challenges of running through the mud and more mud, up and down the hills and more hills, all the while concentrating on staying on course and staying on our feet! The course was incredibly challenging and scenic. Overall, this was an exhilarating experience! Thank you to all of the volunteers. They did a terrific job and were very encouraging. Thanks for doing a great job in organizing the challenge.

I have done this race a few times in the past and was very excited to hear it was coming back. My only gripe, and I have had this opinion of a few past High Rock Challenges. This is a tough race one in which you battle up steep inclines get fully submerged in water etc. I can't seem to figure out at which point painting fingernails and finishing a grueling race with a beach ball on your back comes in? I know the race is based on teamwork and events are made to slow your time down, I just feel the race could be finished with a tougher, more challenging event. One which shows the battle that was going on behind the tree cover. Just my opinion. That said, I Look foward to the race and cant wait for next years.

I had lots of laughs zig-zagging thru High Rock! I wish there were pictures of the nail polish station. Seeing all these teams running through the woods with nail polish covering their finger tips was hilarious! I like the staggered start and your volunteers were helpful, and friendly. My only complaint was the lack of drinking water during the race.

I loved the whole event. The only thing that bothered both my teammate and I was around the 3-4-mile mark right after hourglass pond. The markings for the race at that point were confusing; there was a lot of trees with orange tape on different paths and we didn't know where the correct direction was. We and a number of other runners ended up going over 1 mile in the wrong direction, thus losing many minutes of time. A simple white paper with a black arrow taped on a tree pointing in the right direction would have helped us stay on track.

Great fun. Teams all showed great sportmanship and encouragement. Course was a lot of fun. many thanks to th wonderful volunteers and organizers of the race. If you advertise it more, you will get more participants. I will certainly tell all my friends.

One other things I forgot to mention in my last comment was that for the amount of money we spent per team, it would've been nice to have water/gatorade mix stops....at least 1/2 way through and after some of the challenges. It would be nice to have that next year. I also thought most of the food went to waste....not everyone likes packed sandwich wraps. A BBQ would've been nice instead
