NYARA Races and Clinics

The Longest Day

New York Adventure Race
Southern Catskills
May 17, 2008

The Longest Day

Were you a participant in the Longest Day? Let us know what you thought.

As our first adventure race this may have been a rather brave leap but we had a great time and really appreciate the efforts of organizers!!! The participants were also great, providing us rookies with pointers along the way. Our main goal was just finishing and we succeeded there, although with a rather minimum number of OP points. The only problem we had (other than our own mistakes) was with the canoe portage around dam - there was major confusion about the put-in location which caused us to lose 15-20 minutes and then a rather big traffic jam as everybody piled up. The other big difficulty was the large number of unmarked trails in HLSP and mtn bike areas - it sure made things confusing at times!

- Dave Wise, wiseguys

That had to be one of the best races I've ever participated it. Great spot, great organization, great challenges and above all.....loads of fun !

- Dean Orfas, There's More

As a first timer doing a race such as this our team did not know what to expect. The navigation was tough at first but we got the hang of it as time went on, I'm guessing everyone found cp6 other then us I would love to know where the hell that was. Other then that the race was fun also the biking up the mountain in the last part of the race was just impossible for us and the fact that people were coming back from the finish with their bikes attached to their cars really killed any will power whatever was left. At least we finished around 7:40 so we are happy that we went all the way.

Kudos to the entire NYARA organization for a tremendous experience! We were there at the beginning of TLD in June of 2002 and were soundly defeated by our inexperience and the course set up. A second DNF at TLD-Bear Mnt in 2003 almost resulted in our short lived AR \"careers\" coming to an end. This was our first time back with the NYARA (and specifically TLD) and we LOVED the format! The rogaine-style is ingenious and I cannot believe that more races don't do this? We finally finished TLD, despite rolling our canoe over in the Wallkill. Were we the only ones? Thanks again to the NYARA and their volunteers.

This was our first race and after our great expirecne not our last. It was an awsome coures and an awsome time. We thought the race was well supproted and organised. Great work guys!!!!

I'm only in my third year of racing, but I can definitely say this was one of the best races I've done. The last part of the course in the Gunks was breathtaking, making this my favorite race to date. Biking along the tops of those mountains and then runing the cliffs around the lake made all those mental and physical pains well worth it in my book. Amy and Rodney designed a unique and challenging course, and I hope they will continue to direct races as I'm eager for more! Congratulations and thanks to all of NYARA. See you at the Shag.

Fantastic course, superb organization. Great mixture of deep-in-the woods Trek and MTB with sections of road riding. You could tell those CP locations were chosen by hard-core Adventure Racers turned Race Directors. We were surprised at how much we loved (and loved how much we were surprised by) the new wrinkle of not getting any maps until 2 minutes before the Start. You started us off on our toes and kept us there for 12 hours!

- Dan Brannen, Paramount Adventure

Thanks to Rodney, Amy, Denise and all the volunteers! What a great race!! I really liked the optional CPs right from the start of the race. You saw teams all the time and were able to feel right in the mix. Special thanks to the all male team that helped pull my teammate and canoe to shore after we flipped two seconds after we put in!! loved the killer climb on the bikes, the view was amazing. it was nice to race in a new venue. Rodney and Amy designed a great course and race!

just wanted to say thx to rodney and amy for a good race and a new venue. nice to see a change of scenery. riding through the carrige trail is quite a different look than riding through ringwood. and without the lovely and talented denise mast and jim mertz and their selfless help, the race wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable.

- Steve Fleisig,

Hats off to Amy, Rodney, Denise and the crew. They put together a great race and challenged every one of us to our limits. An amazing course in three beautiful parks with distinctly different terrains. This will go down as one of the top 3 courses I have ever raced. thanks for the time and effort you put into this event.
